The Big Red Truck
10/21/2007
The day started out like any other. Little did we know that the events that were about to unfold this day would change our lives forever.
We were driving to Ohio on a return trip from a ferret show in Michigan. We pulled into a fuel station for a little break from the long drive. All of a sudden the show ferrets in the car went wild with excitement, dooking and pressing their little noses up to the side of the cage. Our first response was intrigue, wondering if this was an example of the great animal instinct. We've all heard about it, but how many of us have ever witnessed it or believe in the power of an animal's extra sensory perception? Our next thought was in wondering if we were about to have an earthquake or some other disaster. We started looking around for signs of danger. Oddly enough, all of the ferrets were moving to one direction, clawing, dooking, biting at the cage and making loud sounds of excitement. As the hair stood on end on the backs of our necks we looked to the general direction that the ferrets were seeking. It was a beautiful clear fall day, no signs of inclement weather. What could it be. As our eyes scanned the horizon our view was blocked by a very big, very red, TRUCK. As our eyes planted on the Big Red Truck we knew in an instant by the stirring feelings inside that this was the source of concern.
The uncertainty, confusion, anticipation, excitement, so many emotions were running rampant in our heads! How could it be... after all these years. Could it be true? Or were our eyes simply playing cruel tricks with our minds, teasing us, taunting us. We wanted so much for it to be true..., but we knew from life's experience that it just could not be. Yet, something was pulling us, drawing us nearer, nearer, nearer to... The Big Red Truck! We all knew against our better judgment that you just don't go approaching strangers. That's right! You just don't approach strangers! We all fretted. But why... what power is drawing us to THE BIG RED TRUCK?
Being of sound mind and body and generally having our wits about us, we made the right decisions this day. Knowing that it was wrong to approach strangers and in doing so the danger we could possibly be in, we decided we would not approach THE BIG RED TRUCK. After all, we do live in a democratic society. We talked about it, voted on it, argued about it a little and came to a consensus. Julie had to go! There was no sense in all of us facing certain doom!
Julie approached THE BIG RED TRUCK with great caution, all the while wishing she could just wake up from this terrible dream, wishing she had just taken up macramé instead of ferreting, wishing she had better friends! But, she was the chosen one. She was the leader, the one that would solve this great mystery of what was drawing everyone to THE BIG RED TRUCK. Julie approached cautiously knowing she was facing certain doom, swinging wide to get a good view of what might be lurking inside. She would have given anything at this point to be anywhere else, yet, she was strangely attracted to the cab of the truck. She began to feel tingly, the closer she got, like the little girl she was on Christmas morning. Oh the flood of emotions, so confusing. Could it be the mask of danger that was lurking inside, or was there something wonderful beyond the boundary of that BIG RED STEEL DOOR separating her from her destiny. Julie was now within striking distance of the great vehicle and though her heart was ready to leap from her chest she felt OK that she was there. Just then the window rolled down....
Julie was standing at the door to THE BIG RED TRUCK, when the window came down. Julie was filled with fear and anticipation. Just then a little face popped out. It was an elderly woman, small in stature with silver gray hair yet, she seemed happy with life. Julie felt relief as she was still very curious as to why she was standing there, all alone. She knew her friends would rush in if she found herself in trouble. she was certain of it... she hoped... no, she was sure of it... she thought. Julie stated to the woman, "You're never going to believe this". Before another word could be uttered an arm popped out of the window. It was a burly arm, obviously attached to a burly man as the woman didn't look like she had it in her. Attached to the arm was a large hand and in it was a card. As the arm stretched out to greet her Julie reached out and took the card.
